Champions are at the heart of Riot Games’ MOBA, League of Legends (LoL), and the Mastery System allows many players to express their skill growth outside of Ranked play. Since its implementation, Riot has changed the Mastery System in a variety of ways. Some updates were well-received, while others missed the mark with fans.
Join us, heroes of Runeterra, as we explain the latest LoL Mastery System changes and share the first details about Riot’s plans for future improvements.

Riot’s Changes To The LoL Mastery System
The new and evolved LoL Champion Mastery system was introduced with patch 14.10 and fully enabled on May 15, 2024. Riot Games wanted to improve the Mastery System to reflect how players don’t stop mastering champions after they hit level 7.
Before we get to the most recent changes, check out a recap of the patch 14.10 Mastery System overhaul:
- Uncapped Champion Mastery Levels
- Per-split Mastery Progression & Rewards
- Per-split Mastery Champion Sets & Rewards
- Unlockable Champion Titles for Level 10 Mastery
Riot Games’ Andrei “Meddler” van Roon and Pu “Pupulasers” Liu explained in a dev update video (see below) on June 11, 2024. They discuss how the developer feels some changes have landed well, such as uncapping the Mastery System levels and the ability to unlock Champion titles.
Riot admits they’ve missed the mark on some aspects of the update, such as the visual overhaul. Per the LoL patch 14.12 patch notes:
“Since we launched the updated Champion Mastery system in patch 14.10, we’ve been keeping an eye on how it’s landed with all of you. And while some parts were successful, like uncapping mastery and the ability to unlock champion titles, it’s clear that we’ve missed the mark in other places. We’re working on updates based on your feedback, such as revisiting the new mastery visuals, that are going to take a bit more time, but this is the first of more changes to come.“
Upcoming LoL Champion Mastery Changes
Van Roon noted that many fans felt the new Champion Mastery visuals didn’t match LoL’s aesthetic, so Riot has been working on a revised visual design that integrates some aspects of the previous design into the new one.
The design lead for LoL, Jordan Checkman, showed off the new visual direction via X and asked for fans’ feedback. The developer said Riot wants to “strike a balance between respecting the previous mastery but updating it, as opposed to a complete re-imagining like previously.”

At the time of writing, it’s unclear when the visual changes will be incorporated into a LoL patch. Below, you can find more confirmed upcoming Mastery changes, as revealed in the June 11 dev update.
- Riot is investigating a way to progress Champion Mastery in more game modes. The developer agrees it is a problem and is working on it, but they don’t have a solution yet.
- The developers plan to bring back the removed Champion Mastery challenges “based on the number of Mastery 7 Champions achieved.”
Those are all the upcoming Mastery changes the developer is actively working on, but what has changed in LoL Patch 14.12, released on June 12, 2024?
LoL Patch 14.12 Champion Mastery Change
Some fans need clarification about the precise changes made to the Champion Mastery system in the LoL 14.12 update. With 14.12, there’s only one change, which you can read about below:
“We’ve seen player feedback about the bonus Milestone for Champion Mastery being too difficult, so we’re lowering the requirements. The bonus milestone will only require three S-grade games instead of seven.”
