Wings Gaming: Overview of this classic Chinese Dota 2 team

Share this post:

Wings Gaming was a Chinese esports team that played Dota 2. They were best known for winning the International 2016, where they took home a prize of more than $9 million. Wings Gaming was founded in 2014 and rose quickly to the top of the Dota 2 professional scene. This review will look closer at Wings Gaming, its successes, and what made them so successful. It will also look at their current status and what happened to the team after winning The International 2016.

Active: 2014 – 2017

Beginning in 2014, Wings Gaming quickly rose to the top of China’s professional Dota 2 scene. Their first major tournament win came at MarsTV Dota 2 League 2015, where they defeated Vici Gaming 3-2 and took home the first prize of $75,000. This victory set them up for a string of wins in both domestic and international tournaments. In April 2016, Wings Gaming was crowned champion at ESL One Manila, making them the first Chinese team to win a major Dota 2 tournament.

They followed this success with an even bigger victory at The International 2016, where they defeated Digital Chaos 3-1 to become the tournament champions and take home a staggering $9 million in prize money. This victory cemented their status as one of the best teams in the world and gave them global recognition.

After their victory at The International 2016, Wings Gaming disbanded in 2017. The reason for the disbandment is still unclear, but it has been suggested that internal conflicts among the members led to the team’s dissolution. Or it could have been the product of low finishes in some of the tournaments they attended post-TI6.

Despite their short lifespan, Wings Gaming left an indelible mark on the Dota 2 scene and will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest teams in the game’s history. They achieved many successes during their time together, proving that a team of lesser-known players can still come together and make esports history. They served as an inspiration to other aspiring esports teams and showed that with hard work, anything is possible.
